False AraliaGreenery & Foliage

Developing a photosynthetic relationship...

We carry many plants at Homescapes, each with their own personalities and requirements. To build a healthy relationship with a plant is to choose plants that fit your lifestyle. Plants are a lot like people - some are very independent and need only the smallest amount of attention and others are tempermental and moody. With each quality, there is a trade-off - the independent ones are usually (but not always) very hearty and green with big, waxy leaves. The delicate ones might have little blooms of color or some other special effect that offsets the trouble we go through for them.

But never should we be afraid of plants. Most plant killing is done by overwatering. Consider the natural habitat of a plant. They don't get water every day - in fact, there might be several days in a row they don't get any water at all. Certainly, if the drought is longer than a normal cycle, then they die, but really, most plants can go several days without watering, and this is true for nearly every plant Homescapes, Carmel carries.

Featured at left is the False Arelia. Part of the Arelia family, they have graceful, spiky leaves and can grow tremendously tall. Like most of Homescapes, Carmel's plant selection, these guys like medium, indirect light and a relatively dry soil. This plant is originally from the tropics, so it does fare better in humid environments. Mist it daily, if possible. Cool climates ensure growth.
