Thompson and Beau Lange have been operating Homescapes, Carmel since 1999. They stock their store as a world market with unusual objects appealing especially to customers with eclectic design sensibilities. Nothing is mass produced. The Homescapes Carmel product mix is especially Asian but features textiles from all over the world plus, for example, pillows from Turkey, craft items from Canada, sofas from Dallas (which is also a part of the world, of course).

Importing trips can be 2-3 weeks, taking them to any of the four corners of the earth. "We might spend two weeks driving around Mexico in a truck," Thompson said. They sometimes perch a video camera on a convenient wall or garbage can and shoot commercials featuring themselves in some remote location such as Bangkok, Shanghai, London or Petrograd.

Homescapes Carmel provides a good shopping resource for local people; Thompson and Beau sponsor big open house affairs serving wine, food & music. "We're giving back to the community," Thompson said. In his spare time, Thomspon runs marathons. He has a goal of running a marathon in all seven continents. So far, he has run marathons at the Great Wall of China, Big Sur, Rio and Sydney. In March, he is scheduled to run 26.2 miles up and down a glacier on King George Island in Antarctica, and later to run in South Africa and Athens, which will take care of the remaining continents.

Homescapes Carmel reflects the life of travel and adventure that the two brothers are leading.
