Kerin hildebrandt one could say that my exposure to art began in the womb seeing as though I was born to two graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design. As a child, I was an art show groupie, accompanying my parents to the latest and greatest exhibits. My "eye" was being trained for as long as I can remember.
My conscious immersion in the art field occurred after I graduated from The University of Vermont with a degree in English and Spanish. Throughout my college years I took a few art courses but, although they were pleasurable, they were strictly extracurricular. Upon obtaining a job in a a craft gallery, I was overwhelmed with creative energy. I enrolled in several art classes ranging from photography to sculpture and unveiled my passion for three-dimensional art. If I was creating anything with my hands I was content.
For the past nine years I have been fortunate enough to work mostly with my hands. I spend most of my time designing and making jewelry for my company, "Wire Works". I sell these creations all over the country in small boutiques and galleries that feature American Craft. Although I find my jewelry business challenging and fulfilling, larger metal sculpture has always intrigued me.
After taking a welding course and several sculpture classes at Monterey Peninsula College, I set up my own welding studio at home to further explore my artistic possibilities. The purity of line, the strength of shape and the spirit of movement are the inspiration for my designs. Steel is my main medium. - both new and recycled. My style ranges from clean and serene to "Funky Folk". Both styles fee my soul. I am never happier than when I am playing with metal.
I feel this is only the beginning of my creative life and I look forward to many years of getting dirty in my studio.
