Pastel Paintings

my vision is to create work that awakens our ties to the earth.

All of my work is done on location in chalk pastel over a period of days and each painting is a composite of the strong elements within a chosen scene that are revealed by the Sun as it moves across the sky. My paintings intend to portray the spirit of the land, the trees and the rocks, and the sky and the clouds of a specific place on earth.

Although I have been Artist-in-Residence in Yosemite and Isle Royale National Parks, most of my works are of the ³ordinary² landscapes around us every day that we sometimes take for granted or fail to see. Some of my paintings portray "endangered landscapes" threatened with alteration or destruction. All of these landscapes hold the essence of why I live here and painting them is what I love to do.

I hope that my paintings cause the viewer to feel present at these places, to discover and experience them as if seeing them for the first time; and I hope this way of seeing transforms every part of the viewer's life. I also hope that this conscious way of observing causes a deeper and more personal appreciation of our environment that leads to greater protection and stewardship of the earth through which we live.
